RAHANA – Dorsa Sobhani was arrested yesterday, March 6, after her family house in Sari was raided by 12 intelligence agents who had video cameras with them. Like many young Iranian Baha’is, the 20-year old has been banned from university studies.
According to a RAHANA reporter, Sobhani is a member of the 1 Million Signatures Campaign and an advocate of universal education rights in Iran. The arrest is related to her human rights activities as well as her Baha’i faith.
Earlier, in the night of March 2, intelligence agents raided and searched her family home in an attempt to arrest Sobhani. On March 4, Sobhani’s father was brutally arrested as he was leaving the house in the morning. He was interrogated for several hours and threatened that, if did not turn in his daughter, the entire family would be arrested.
March 2nd and 3rd will be remembered as 2 days of nationwide night raids and arrests targeting rights activists. Many young Baha’is were among those arrested, including Navid Khanjani in Isfahan, Ighan Shahidi in Kermanshah, Sama Nourani in Shiraz and Dorsa Sobhani in Sari.
The houses of 2 other young Baha’is, Sepehr Atefi and Hesam Misaghi, were also raided, but until now agents have been unable to arrest the 2 men. Both are advocates of universal education rights in Iran.
