RAHANA – A few years ago, while Pezhman Rahimi was serving a 2- year prison sentence for provoking labor unrest at the Haft-Tapeh sugar complex and the Ahvaz pipe factory, another court case was opened against him, this time for disrupting public order. However, it did not end there.
In a move that has all the indications that judicial officials are on a fishing expedition, Rahimi was recently notified by a court in Ahvaz that he has been tried in absentia and sentenced to 1 year in prison in relation to an arrest and a few hours of interrogation dating back to 2005, according to Akhbar Rooz. At the time, Rahimi was briefly detained by the Intelligence Ministry for a speech he gave at Ahvaz University on prostitution and its social ramifications. He was released to a third party custodian after being interrogated for 48 hours.
Now, 4 years after the incident, Rahimi has received notice that he was tried in absentia and sentenced to 1 year in prison for “spreading prostitution”. He has appealed the verdict. Additionally, the labor activist has to make a court appearance on April 11 to face the disrupting public order charge given to him a few years back, while he had been serving a previous sentence.
