RAHANA – Ali Malihi, journalist and a member of the Advar Tahkim Vahdat, was arrested and taken to Evin Prison on February 9. Malihi has been reportedly beaten in prison.
According to a RAHANA reporter, during the first days after his arrest, Malihi was severely beaten and pressured by his interrogators who were infuriated by his resistance.
According to a newly released prisoner, Malihi’s interrogation and investigations continue.
25 days after his arrest, Malihi’s family and lawyer have yet to meet with the investigating magistrate and therefore it is not clear what he has been accused of, said Hasan Asadi who is the head of human rights affairs of the Advar Tahkim Vahdat organization.
Asadi added that the recent relocation of some magistrate courts to Evin prison has made it impossible for Malihi’s lawyer to file a notice of appearance of counsel, which was signed by his client prior to his arrest. Malihi has been denied visits with his family throughout his detention.
According to Asadi, Malihi’s political and press activities were always peaceful and within the law, a fact that can be corroborated by people who know him.
Asadi said that recent releases have given hope to Malihi’s family and friends that he can be released on bail before Nowruz and exonerated later from all charges.
