RAHANA – Majid Tavakoli remains in solitary confinement weeks after he received a long prison term form the Revolutionary Court. During his interrogation, Tavkoli was severely beaten by his interrogators.
According to a RAHANA reporter, since his arrest on December 7, Tavloki has only called his family the day after his trial, and his brother visited with him in prison once with guards at his side.
The student activist was tried without his lawyer’s presence by judge Salavati at the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court and sentenced to 8 ½ years in prison.
A new case has been opened against Tavakoli in the Revolutionary Court and he face new charges related to a student publication -Khat-e-Sefr (Line Zero)- of which he was the managing director before it was banned in 2006. It appears that the case which was originally in the Public Servants Court following a complaint by the IRGC, has now been referred to the Revolutionary Court. The new charge of insulting the Leader has been added to the old case to clear the way for putting further pressure on the student leader.
The new charges and the ongoing pressure on Tavakoli are part of the vindictive measures taken by judicial and intelligence authorities in retaliation to his past criticism of the Leader including a speech given on December 7 at Amir Kabir University.
Majid Tavakoli has spent a total of 20 months in prison –including time spent during prior detentions- of which 7 months have been in solitary confinement.
Before his trial, Tehran Prosecutor, Jafari Dolatabadi had visited him in Evin Prison. During the visit the prosecutor asked Tavakoli to comply with what the interrogators had ordered him, and repent and apologize from the Leader in his trial. Despite being threatened with a heavy prison sentence, Tavakoli stood his ground during the prosecutor’s visit as well as in his trial. His defiance in the face of all past and present threats has clearly angered the authorities who have upped their illegal pressure in order to break him down.
